How Can I Check If My Car Is Taxed?

What You Need to Know About Checking Your Car Tax in Ireland

Whether you are buying a second-hand car and want to verify key details before committing, or you simply cannot remember when your own tax runs out, checking if a car is taxed in Ireland is something many people search for each month. The good news is that it takes less than a minute.

The Quickest Way to Check

The Government of Ireland runs a free online service called Check My Vehicle, which lets you look up the tax and NCT status of any Irish-registered vehicle in a matter of seconds. All you need is the vehicle's Irish registration number and the tool will show the latest available motor tax status. There is no account to create and no form to fill out beyond the registration number itself.

What Does Check My Vehicle Show You?

Once you enter a registration number, you can see whether the vehicle's motor tax is currently up to date, when it is due to expire, the tax class and basis of assessment, and the NCT or Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT) status. It is particularly useful if you are buying a used car and want to verify key details about the vehicle before handing over any money.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

The service only works for vehicles registered in Ireland. If you are trying to check a car registered in the UK or elsewhere, this tool will not help.

The data is also not updated instantly. If you have just taxed your car or passed an NCT, it can take some time (often up to 24 hours) for the system to reflect the change. If you check straight after renewing and the status still appears out of date, try again the following day.

You may also come across a status that reads "declared off the road". This means the owner has formally registered the vehicle as not in use, a process known as a Statutory Off-Road Declaration (SORD). A vehicle with this status is exempt from motor tax but cannot legally be driven on public roads during that period.

What If My Tax Has Expired?

If you find that your motor tax has lapsed, you will need to renew it before returning to the road. Tax can be paid online at motortax.ie, by post, or in person at your local Motor Taxation Office. Is Motor Tax A Legal Requirement?

It is. Motor tax is required by law for any vehicle driven on public roads in Ireland. Driving without it can result in a fixed charge penalty notice, so it is worth keeping an eye on your expiry date each year, particularly if you have opted out of postal reminders.
