If our summer is to be anything similar to last year we can expect warm, dry weather and possible water shortages. We have put together some helpful tips which will help you to reduce your water consumption at home.

Turn off the tap

Remember to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or washing your hands and face. This could save up to six litres of water per minute.


It is important to fix any leaks or dripping taps as they can waste a large amount of water. A dripping tap can waste 15 litres of water a day, or 5,500 litres of water a year.

Take a shower

Taking a shower uses half the amount of water that a bath does. Also try to cap your showers at no longer than 5 minutes.

Dishwasher & Washing Machine

Only run your dishwasher and washing machine when they are full. This saves water and will also help to reduce your energy bills.

If you are purchasing these appliances remember to take into consideration how water-efficient the different models are.


When boiling food use the correct pot size i.e. do not use a bigger pot than you need. Also, remember to put the lid on the pot to reduce the amount of water evaporating.

Drinking Water

Keep a jug of water in your fridge. This will mean that you do not have to run the tap to get your drinking water cool enough.
