Avoid a Holiday From Hell

safety firstHave you ever had to visit a doctor or an accident and emergency department on your holiday abroad? For many people, emergency medical expenses are amongst the most common claims on travel insurance. This is closely followed by trip cancellation as a result of personal injury, serious illness or family bereavement.

Now that school is out for summer, it’s time to get your ducks in a row before you jet off to the sun. With so much to organise, let us do the legwork for you when it comes to searching for your travel insurance.

We all hope that we never need to make a claim, but should the need arise, we’ve got you covered.

If you do find yourself in need of medical attention while you’re away, it’s good to know that most insurers have an Emergency Assistance Service, so we would advise you to keep your insurance details with you at all times. If a family emergency arises at home and you need to go back, your travel insurance can cover the cost of flights to get you back. Make sure to check out your policy to see what it includes.

If you do have a claim to make, it’s important to let your insurer know as soon as you can – even while you’re still on holiday. If you are claiming for medical expenses, you should keep all receipts as well as the contact details of the doctor or hospital. By the same token, if you have to claim for stolen property, you will need to include a police report with the claims form.

In the event that you need to cancel your trip, your claim must be supported by written confirmation from a doctor if someone is unable to travel. You will also need to include confirmation of the cancelled transport or holiday booking from the airline or travel agent.

Should you need to claim for a flight delay or delayed baggage, the claim has to be supported by the airline. You should also hang on to flight tickets, baggage tags and receipts for any emergency purchases.
