How to get a Cheap House Policy

We have put together a few useful tips to help you save money and get a cheap home insurance quote.

Reduce the risk on your home
Installing burglar alarms, window and door locks or fire alarms, depending on the recommendations will reduce the risk of a burglary.
Increase the payable excess on a policy
The consumer usually has to contribute on average €200 to any claim made, but a willingness to pay more can often reduce your premium.
Always review your situation as to whether to claim or not
A consumer with a history of 'no claims' is more likely to be offered lower premiums than one who has made many. It might be worth covering smaller damages yourself when they occur in order to maintain your 'no claims' status as this can have a dramatic effect on premiums.
Never under insure your property
Under insuring your property is a false economy. The correct insurance will save you from being seriously out of pocket if you need to claim. Conducting an annual inventory, keeping receipts and making sure valuable individual items are covered is recommended.
Think carefully about the add-ons you need. For instance, do you really need accidental damage cover? This can increase premiums by up to 25 per cent.
Consider security fittings for any valuable pieces of art.
Take photographs and serial numbers of all valuables and use some kind of security code or magic marker.
Consider installing sensor lights at the front and back of your home - these will welcome you home and deter prowlers.
Make sure a thief cannot open your door by putting an instrument or a hand through the letterbox and reaching for the release mechanism. Install a security cover or a cage inside the letterbox to catch post.
