Frequently Asked Questions
- Does the Chartis bicycle insurance policy carry an excess?
- Almost all insurance policies include a policy excess. Our
policy excess is €75. This is the first part of any claim you might
make which you have to pay yourself.
- Can I opt to pay a higher voluntary excess?
- No, the policy excess of €75 is standard and there is not an
option to select a higher or voluntary excess.
- What amount should I insure my bicycle for?
- You should insure your bicycle for its current replacement
value as new. The sum insured should include the value of any fixed
accessories (including VAT).
- Are there any bicycles that cannot be covered under the
policy?
- Bicycles over 5 years old cannot be covered.
- How many bicycles can I cover?
- You can cover up to 5 individual bicycles with an individual or
total value not exceeding €5,000. If your bicycle(s) exceed this
value, you must get approval from underwriters before cover is
granted.
- Can I get instant bicycle insurance?
- Yes. Cover can start immediately, once payment is accepted and
authorised online. We currently accept laser cards and credit
cards. If the premium is over €300 we offer a Direct Debit
facility.
- If I change my mind and cancel my bicycle insurance policy,
will I get a full refund of premium?
- You have 15 days to change your mind and cancel your policy
which is referred to as a 'cooling off' period. A full refund of
premium will be given provided you have not made a claim under the
policy during this 'cooling off' period. Please see the online

- Can I pay my bicycle insurance by installments online?
- We offer a direct debit facility for premiums over the value of
€300.
- Is my bicycle covered away from home or abroad?
- Yes. Your bicycle is automatically covered in the Republic of
Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man and the
Channel Islands. Cover is also extended to the European Union for
30 days any one trip and up to 90 days in total in any one policy
term.
- Is their a specific type of bicycle lock I must have?
- Yes, you must have a Sold Secure approved lock. We have the
listing of Sold Secure Approved locks displayed on our
website.
- Is my bicycle covered for theft if it is not locked?
- Specific security requirements are necessary for cover to
apply. Please see the online policy document for further
details.
- Are tyres, fixed accessories and wheels covered for theft?
- These items are covered only if the insured bicycle has been
stolen at the same time.
- Is my bicycle covered under my home insurance policy?
- Usually the answer to this question is No, as all home
insurance policy wordings differ. You will need to contact your
home insurance provider to discuss this further.
- Does my bicycle insurance cover my bicycle whilst in my garden
shed and/or garage?
- Yes, subject to security requirements. Please see the online
policy documents for full details.
- What is covered under replacement bicycle hire?
- Within the Republic of Ireland, the insurer that we have
selected (Chartis) will pay for the reasonable cost of the hire of
an alternative bicycle from a recognised reputable bicycle dealer
whilst you are awaiting repair or replacement of your insured
bicycle, but your claim must be approved.
- What to do in the event of a claim?
- Contact Chill Insurance on 1890
30 20 20 within 48 hours of an insured incident to obtain a claim
form complete, sign and return the claim form with the appropriate
documents as requested by us which may include receipts for your
bicycle, medical bills and a Garda Report Form. The claim form and
accompanying documents must be returned to us within 30 days of
making the original claim.
- Is insurance cover provided for all my bicycles?
- No, you must specify each bicycle you wish to cover. You can
cover up to 5 individual bicycles with an individual or total value
not exceeding €5,000. If your bicycle(s) exceed this value, you
must get approval from underwriters before cover is granted.
- If friends come to stay for the weekend, is their bicycle
covered under my bicycle insurance?
- No. The bicycle insured must be owned by you, the policyholder,
and listed on the policy.
- Can I insure my child's bicycle?
- Yes, if your child is permanently residing in your home,
his/her bicycle can be insured provided you, the policyholder, are
his/her parent or legal guardian and you must specify each bicycle
you wish to cover.
- Am I covered for bodily injury if I have an accident and fall
off my bike?
- Yes, you are covered under the Personal Accident section of the
policy for various types of bodily injury. Please see the online
policy document for further details.
- Is racing or competition covered?
- No, this cover should be arranged through your cycling
club.
- Is it safe to input my credit card details on-line?
- Yes, we use the latest in encryption technology through SSL
which guarantees that any personal information or credit card
details that you have input on our website is protected. On-line
purchase could not be made safer. If, however, you do not feel
comfortable with entering your card details on-line and you would
