Where to get a mortgage deal

Tracker mortgages, with their attractive rates, are on the way out, but borrowers still have choices.

Tracker mortgages have been a very attractive option for homeowners in Ireland, offering better rates than standard variable rate mortgages. Review of the General Insurance Market in Ireland by Tom Finlay April 2008

The objective of this high-level review of the General Insurance Market in Ireland is to consider how a consumer might evaluate the overall value being provided. This report concludes that in order to do this not only the price must be taken into account but also key product and service features.

The report focuses exclusively on the two dominant General Insurance sectors namely, Home Insurance and Motor Insurance.

The guys at www.insureme.ie also have a list of useful tips. Applying some of these tips, insureme.ie took an example of a 30-year-old male driving a 2006 Ford Focus 1.6 valued at €25,000. The highest quote was ARBat €1,434 and the lowest with Allainz at €831.57 with Axa coming in at €888.31.

The driver already had two years of a no claims bonus. If one more year of driving on his parent’s car was added in, the Axa quote came down to €492.74. If he then added a spouse with her own car, it came down to €403.62.

Other changes such as reducing likely mileage, adding security and doing an advanced driving course all reduced the premium with various insurers.

However, the cheapest quotes were still €403.62 with Axa and €429 with Hibernian, representing savings of 83.56 and €830.26.

So shop around for your VW or Toyota as well as your petrol and insurance and save up to €2,700.

In an article that somewhat unfairly targeted Insurance Broker Charges, InsureMe.ie came out tops yet again. Please see below editorial:

Broker quotes

Brokers were cheaper in only a handful of cases. In some cases, brokers’ quotes were up to €400 more expensive than direct quotes from the insurer.

Axa provided a direct quote of €665 for comprehensive cover for Eithne, compared to €931 for Axa cover.

However, insureme.ie provided a cheaper quote for Axa cover for Eithne, at €561, proving that it is just as important to shop around for a broker as it is an insurer.

The cheapest broker quote for John’s comprehensive cover was €316 from insureme.ie, according to the survey.

The cheapest broker quote for Eithne was €438 for Hibernian cover through insureme.ie, compared to €445 for the cheapest direct quote.

The Irish Brokers Association (IBA), which represents brokers, said one of its members would provide comprehensive cover for Eithne for €358. The cheapest broker quote for Derek was €1,406 from insureme.ie.
